How to answer “what is your greatest weakness”

Pick a real weakness that is not central to this role, name it in one sentence and explain what you do about it. The recruiter is checking self-awareness and whether you can work on yourself. “I am a perfectionist” usually sounds like a dodge.

How to handle this conversation

  1. Name the weakness plainly

No hedging: “I tend to take on too many things at once, because I find it hard to say no.” A short, honest sentence earns more trust than a rehearsed formula.

  2. Show what you do about it

This is the second and more important half of the answer. “For the past year I have planned my week on Monday and checked new requests against that plan before agreeing.”

  3. Avoid weaknesses central to the role

For an analyst role, do not talk about missing details. Pick something real that does not undermine the basics of the job you are applying for.

  4. Have a second example ready

Recruiters often ask for another weakness or a time this one caused a problem. Keep a short story with a lesson up your sleeve.

The situation

You are halfway through an interview that is going well. The recruiter asks about your weaknesses and adds straight away that she does not want to hear about perfectionism. You do not want to sound fake or say something that rules you out.

Who you talk to

Recruiter

Direct and has heard every stock answer. She asks for a specific time the weakness caused trouble and what has changed in how you work since then.

The counterpart also has private goals and information that are never shown upfront. You discover them only through the conversation, the same way you would in real life.

What makes it hard

  • Stock answers are dismissed at once as rehearsed.
  • The recruiter asks for an example where the weakness had real consequences.
  • A second weakness is requested after the first answer goes well.

Your goals

  • Name a real weakness in one sentence
  • Show concrete steps that keep it in check
  • Stay calm when asked about its consequences

What the report looks at

  • Whether the answer is honest rather than rehearsed
  • Whether the weakness leaves the core requirements of the role intact
  • Whether you give a concrete example of working on it
  • How you respond when asked for a second weakness
