Talking to your boss

How to tell your boss you are pregnant

Choose the timing yourself, share the news in one or two sentences and then move to what you already know about the months ahead. You do not need to have every answer on the spot. It is fine to say you will come back with a detailed plan once you have checked your options.

How to handle this conversation

  1. Lead with the news, calmly

There is nothing to apologize for: “I wanted you to hear it from me first. I am pregnant, and the baby is due in March.”

  2. Share only what you have decided

If you do not know yet how long your leave will be, say so: “I am still working out the details and will get back to you by the end of the month.”

  3. Come with a first idea for cover

Naming who could pick up your key projects shows you are thinking about the team, and it gives a worried manager something concrete to hold on to.

  4. Know your rights before the meeting

Check your entitlements with HR or an official source beforehand, so you are not relying on your manager to explain them to you.

Telling my boss I am pregnant

Difficulty
Medium
Duration
8-12 minutes

The situation

You are a few months pregnant and have told family and close friends. Your team is preparing a big launch that falls around the time you plan to start leave. Your manager has been counting on you to lead it. You want to share the news before rumors do, and keep the conversation about planning, not guilt.

Who you talk to

Your manager

Genuinely pleased for you and not hostile, but under pressure to deliver the launch. Quickly starts thinking aloud about dates, cover and who will take over your work.

The counterpart also has private goals and information that are never shown upfront. You discover them only through the conversation, the same way you would in real life.

What makes it hard

  • Congratulations turn into questions about deadlines within the first minute.
  • Your manager asks for exact dates and decisions you have not made yet.
  • Worry about the project can make you feel responsible for fixing everything.

Your goals

  • Share the news clearly and on your own terms
  • Set expectations about what you can and cannot confirm today
  • Agree on a next step for planning cover and the handover

What the report looks at

  • Whether you shared the news without apologizing for it
  • How you respond to questions you are not ready to answer
  • Whether you steered the talk toward a practical plan
  • Whether the conversation ended with a clear next step and date
