How to turn down being a bridesmaid or best man

Start by thanking them for their trust, because being asked is an honor. Then say no clearly and soon, with one honest reason, instead of dragging the decision out for weeks. Say how you want to be there on the day, so the no does not sound like distance.

How to handle this conversation

  1. Start with thanks

“I am so glad you thought of me, it means a lot” shows that your answer is not about a lack of affection.

  2. Answer quickly

The longer you wait, the harder it is for the couple to ask someone else. A clear answer within a few days is fairer than “I will see.”

  3. One real reason

Time, money, other commitments or speaking in front of guests. One is enough: “This year I cannot afford the bachelorette weekend and everything that comes with it.”

  4. Say what you can do

For example: “I would love to help with the decorations and I will be there for you on the day as a guest.” It shows that you care.

I turn down being in a wedding party

Difficulty
Medium
Duration
6-10 minutes

The situation

Your childhood friend just got engaged and asked you to be her maid of honor. The wedding is in six months in another city, and the role comes with costs, organizing the bachelorette party and a speech. You have just started a new job and your budget is tight. You care about her, but you know you cannot take this on. You meet to talk.

Who you talk to

Your friend who is getting married

Happy and not expecting a no. After the first refusal she is disappointed, tries to convince you that you will manage it together and wonders aloud whether the friendship still matters to you.

The counterpart also has private goals and information that are never shown upfront. You discover them only through the conversation, the same way you would in real life.

What makes it hard

  • Your friend’s disappointment makes it hard to hold your decision.
  • She offers concessions, such as covering some of the costs, to change your mind.
  • She asks whether this means you no longer care about her.

Your goals

  • Thank her and say no clearly with one honest reason
  • Keep your decision despite concessions and disappointment
  • Offer another way to support her on the wedding day

What the report looks at

  • Whether the no was said directly and without delay
  • Whether the reason was short and honest
  • How you responded to disappointment and concessions
  • Whether the conversation ended with another way of being there
