How to say no to lending money to a friend
Say no briefly and kindly: show that you understand their situation and decline without explaining your finances at length. You do not have to prove that you have no money. If you want to help in another way, offer something you can really do.
How to handle this conversation
Understanding first, then the no
For example: “I can see things are hard for you right now, and I am sorry. I am not going to lend you the money.” Both sentences are true at once.
Do not justify your budget
Any argument about your spending can be picked apart. A rule is enough: “I do not lend money to friends, because I do not want it to come between us.”
Repeat instead of looking for new reasons
When you hear “I will pay you back in two weeks, I promise,” answer the same way: “I believe you want to. My answer is still no.”
Offer other help if you want to
You could help look for a solution, go through a budget together or lend something other than money. Only if it is a sincere offer, not a way to ease your guilt.
I say no to lending a friend money
- Difficulty
- Medium
- Duration
- 5-8 minutes
The situation
A friend from a previous job calls and asks to borrow a significant sum for a few weeks. They say it is a temporary problem and they will repay quickly. A year ago they borrowed a smaller amount from you and paid it back very late. This time you do not want to lend, but you like them and do not want to lose touch.
Who you talk to
A friend asking for a loan
Likeable and genuinely stressed. They push, remind you that they once helped you move, promise to pay you back with interest and hint that you can surely afford it.
The counterpart also has private goals and information that are never shown upfront. You discover them only through the conversation, the same way you would in real life.
What makes it hard
- Your friend brings up an old favor and plays on your guilt.
- They promise a quick repayment and ask why you do not trust them.
- They ask about your finances as if a no needed proof.
Your goals
- Say no clearly without inventing excuses
- Hold your answer under pressure and guilt
- End the conversation on a kind note
What the report looks at
- Whether the no was said plainly and without apologizing
- Whether you avoided justifying your own money
- How you responded to guilt and promises of repayment
- Whether your tone stayed warm despite the refusal
