Job interview
Behavioral interview for a team lead role
A structured interview for your first team lead position. Expect "tell me about a time" questions and follow-ups on each answer.
- Difficulty
- Medium
- Duration
- 15-20 minutes
The situation
You applied for a team lead role at a mid-sized company. You have led projects before but never managed people formally. This is the second round, a forty-five minute behavioral interview with the hiring manager. The job description mentions conflict resolution, prioritization and developing junior colleagues. You prepared a few stories from your current job. You do not know which of them the interviewer will find convincing.
Your goal
Give answers that show what you personally did and what came of it, and stay clear and specific when the interviewer digs deeper.
Who you talk to
Hiring manager
Experienced, polite and neutral. Asks one main question at a time and follows up on details. Does not show whether an answer landed.
The counterpart also has private goals and information that are never shown upfront. You discover them only through the conversation, the same way you would in real life.
Skills you practice
- Structuring answers around situation, action and result
- Speaking about your own role, not the team's
- Handling follow-up questions without losing the thread
- Talking about mistakes and what you learned
- Keeping answers to a reasonable length
What the feedback looks at
- Clarity and structure of each answer
- Whether your personal actions were specific
- Whether answers included a result or outcome
- How you responded to probing follow-ups
- Honesty and reflection when discussing a failure
